Regents’ Renewal Commentary

Excerpts from NYS Board of Regents Meeting June 10, 2024

Rosalyn Yalow Charter School 4-year Renewal

Here is a snapshot of why Yalow’s charter was renewed, as reported in the minutes of the NYS Board of Regents meeting on June 10, 2024:

“…pursuant to Education Law Section 2852(2)(d), NYSED notes that granting this renewal application provides a significant educational benefit to the students attending and expected to attend this charter school.”

Strengths: The school has committed to providing a positive academic and social culture that reflects strong academic programming using curricula such as Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), Singapore Math, and an inquiry-based science curriculum through Amplify.

Rosalyn Yalow Charter School has an arts education program that provides students access to chorus, violin, and visual art and is facilitated by an external partnership with the Bronx Arts Ensemble.

The school has a variety of external community partnerships that address both the academic and social-emotional needs of the students. These partnerships include curriculum coaches from Amplify and the University of Chicago to support lesson planning and instructional strategies, subject-matter experts in the field through the Kasparov Chess Foundation, fencing instruction from a U.S. Olympic fencing coach, and the Kids in Need Foundation. These partnerships showcase the extensive use of community collaborators RYCS utilizes to enhance access, opportunities, and resources for families and students.

Innovative and Noteworthy Programs: English language learners (ELL) and students with disabilities (SWD) are key participants in the RYCS chess team. At the 2023 National Elementary Chess Championships, the RYCS team of kindergarten and 1st-grade students comprised entirely of ELL (including one SWD), took 3rd place. A second team of 2nd-5th graders took 4th place; 55% are ELL, 20% have IEPs, and 55% are female. RYCS ELL and SWD have learned they can compete with the very best players in the country, despite their risk factors.
