The Power of Reading: The Pajama Program
Kindergarten students in Yalow’s University of Chicago classroom participated in the Pajama Program, having a corporate sponsor—Vineyard Vines—that produced 30 volunteers for one-on-one reading with the students.
Simon & Schuster is partnering with Vineyard Vines to promote Vineyard Vines’ #WhalesForACause initiative, providing each child in the class with 10 books and a pair of pajamas. In addition, for every whale that our students decorated and that got posted to social media, Vineyard Vines donated a book to the Pajama Program and Simon & Schuster matched those donations up to 1,000 books.
Yalow’s participation in the Pajama Program was made possible by one of our parents and is coordinated by special education teacher Catherine Seibert. Yalow’s goal of putting our students in the Pajama Program is to give added impetus to Yalow’s encouragement of children reading at home for fun (with parents or alone), setting them on the path of becoming lifelong readers.
Hip-Hop Chess Day
On Thursday, July 27, 2017, three hip-hop performers—Loaded Lux, Barry Bee, and G-Epic—all competitive chess players, show the Rosalyn Yalow Charter School chess team that chess is every man’s game, teaching students the reasoning skills and mental discipline to lead successful lives. Jerald Times is chess director at Yalow.
On Thursday, July 27, Yalow Charter held its first Hip-Hop Chess Day for the 80 students in our chess team summer camp. Chess and hip-hop have a long tradition in the Bronx and Harlem, and three hip-hop performers—Loaded Lux, Barry Bee, and G-Epic—all competitive chess players, wanted to show our Yalow Tigers that chess is every man’s game, teaching our students the reasoning skills and mental discipline to lead successful lives. Jerald Times, Yalow’s chess director, is the inspiration behind Hip-Hop Chess Day.
Chess Open House
On Saturday, November 5, 2016, some 40 Yalow kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-grade students—the Yalow Tigers—taught their parents how to play chess at Yalow’s first chess open house. Yalow Tigers train every Saturday for the Yalow chess team, and these 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds learn fast. Fast enough to teach their parents why chess is not only fun (attack, defense!) but also intellectually important, requiring focus and geometrical reasoning. It’s no coincidence that studies show chess programs also increase students’ overall scholastic performance.
The Yalow Musketeers
On Saturday, January 28, 2017, 14 Yalow 1st- and 2nd-grade students competed in their first electric épée competition. These 6-, 7-, and 8-year-olds are scholars with swords, making their paths to college. They are being trained by international coach Alexander Abend, along with coaches Jinaki Brown and John Arden.
10 girls and 4 boys from our advanced Saturday classes—where students use steel blades—took part in the competition. The championship bout (shown in the video) was won by Oumarbella Diallo, who defeated Abigail Romero 8-6.
